What do I need/do to start a janitorial business? What type of schooling?

Hi! You don’t need to go to school, but you do need to know how to clean and do it well and fast. I clean small offices and have friends that clean residential homes. You don’t say which you plan to do.
The most important thing for you to do before you begin getting customers is to learn about starting a cleaning business. I understand that leed is Leadership in Energy and Environmental design. What job can I expect to get and will this job be in demand? what Green jobs will be in demand?

LEED is a building certification system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. Its purpose is to provide independent verification of a real estate project’s degree of resource efficiency. Areas covered include energy and water efficiency, indoor air quality, emissions, proximity to mass transit, use of recyclable materials, renewable energy, etc..

A building is rated as Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum depending on how many points are received in each category. There are regular updates which change the point structure as there is always a discussion as to what level of points should be given to any category.

While it is becoming international, LEED is primarily used on government, university and large industry projects that can afford the administrative work and high fees associated with the verification, and can use it as a marketing tool. Everyone wants to be “green” these days, and large real estate projects want to be LEED Certified!

There are two basic levels of testing to become a accredited: Green Associate, and Accredited Professional. Both are fairly easy to achieve and for that reason there are a lot of them out there. They only require money and a lot of rote memorization to pass the tests. In order to be called a LEED AP, or accredited professional, you need to have worked on a LEED project at some point. Otherwise you can only take the Green Associate test.

It is a greatly evolving accreditation process as there are now many specialties including Retail, Healthcare, New Construction, Core and Shell, Interiors, Existing Buildings, etc. For my money, I prefer the far cheaper and simpler Energy Star systems to LEED.

In New York City, if you work in one of these fields, it would look good on your resume. It should only take you a month or two to get the Green Associate tag, and you can work on the Accredited Professional Certification if you find an opportunity to work on a project. You might offer to work as an intern to be able to claim the experience.

As far as a specialty, in my opinion, due to ever increasing regulations, an aging population, and the focus on re-use, I think the best job opportunities are in Existing Buildings. There are millions of inefficient buildings out there that need updating, and only a handful of significant buildings being planned that would be candidates for LEED New Construction.

Most of the “green” jobs are, and will continue to be in the areas of making buildings and facilities of all types more energy efficient. Other than that, as government requires third party verification as part of the Smart Grid effort, there will be jobs as raters. There will continue to be opportunities in the area of renewable energy production as long as the financial incentives last.

I live in a house with 11 cats, 2 dogs and 13 people and you can imagine how crazy it is over here. The upkeep can be very painfully taxing and tedious at the same time. We have a housekeeper named Odette, a short lanky lady who fixes and cleans this place every single day.

She already came to a point of endless chattering about complains and I cannot help but just understand her situation because it is very hard to be in a position where she is. She cleans using water, soap and bleach that we provide her with.

It runs out pretty easily because she needed to run by the cleaning two times to make sure that the stink of the cat pees and poops are taken cared for. Without her presence this place can be a stink bomb and a hell hole.

The room that I stay in houses five cats and 4 humans. We have been experiencing allergies due to the cat hairs and have provided our helper a stronger cleanser to take care of the stink, dirt and disinfecting. But it still doesn’t work.

We have already talked about using Janitorial Cleaning products as a solution to our household cleaning needs because of the cleaning and saving benefits. Buying cleaning stuff for Odette in the grocery store can be a very expensive task specially these days. We already started off by buying the wholesale cleaning products for dishwashing and it already saved us a lot of money.

I also suggested that we can buy these products online and be affiliates so we can earn money on the side or perhaps buy wholesale cleaning products for our every cleaning need and sell the excess to our friends who have the same problems as we have.

To let you know, we are part of a foundation that rescues animals and expect that all of our friends’ household would have either 4-5 stray cats in care. I am just waiting for a reply from all the people that live here and hope they will be swayed by the idea and if they do, Odette will be the happiest cleaner here around and we can enjoy the comfort that hotels have sans paying for the expensive room and board.

Right now as I finish this article the water ran out, Odette just came in and ranted again. I just smiled because I understand where she is coming from. She still has a sink full of plates to clean, 2 bathrooms to take care of, 5 rooms to disinfect, 11 cats to feed, 5 sets of uniforms to wash and kids to pick up from school. I cannot blame her because that’s a big task for her size and age.

Water is very important for cleaning. You may have the best cleansers of the world but nothing would work in the absence of water. As for this cleansing dilemma, I am willing to wait for the consortium of the 12 other people for a solution to this problem. In the mean time I will do my due diligence to speed it up and check out the best cleansers around.
